Awards Luncheon Speaker: Fran Marcum

Please see Fran's remarkable bio below:

Fran, a hometown girl and longtime supporter of the Chamber, has always been supportive of her community and state.   A 1963 graduate of THS she pursued her education at Vanderbilt’s school of education and taught school for seven years before returning home to Tullahoma in 1972 with her husband Dan J. Marcum, after her father died, to help her mother with the family business Micro Craft. Needless to say, the direction of her life changed, and she will share some of her life experiences with the crowd. Fran learned a valuable lesson during this time, to Expect the Unexpected, and Embrace the Opportunities Presented

Today, Fran is a Managing Partner in Relevance Capital, a private equity investment fund and a state fund called Nest TN.  Fran and her husband, Dan, also run a business center that helps new companies get started, Southern Middle Tennessee Entrepreneur Center. Mrs. Marcum believes in education and is a boundless supporter of it.  She was appointed as a Regent by Governor Phil Bredesen to the Tennessee Board of Regents in 2004 and reappointed in 2010, and has served as the Vice Chair.

Marcum is a trustee and former chairman of the Motlow State Community College Foundation, a charter member and director of the Tullahoma Educational Foundation for Excellence, and past president of the Hands-On-Science Center in Tullahoma.  She also helped found ‘Partners for Healing’ in Coffee County. She served on the board of directors of the Nashville Branch of the Federal Reserve System for seven years, having chaired the board twice.

She is a former commissioner of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  She is a founding member of the University of Tennessee Women Philanthropists and served on the UT Foundation and Peabody Alumni Board.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Vanderbilt University’s School of Education, Peabody College. She serves as a mentor in the TN Achieves Program.

Fran is an active member of Rotary International and was the first woman elected into membership of the Tullahoma chapter 26 years ago.  The Tullahoma Business and Professional Women’s Association awarded “Business Woman of the Year” to Marcum in 1991.  She is a member of the Tennessee Women’s Forum, an international organization of women executives and entrepreneurs.   In 2002, Mrs. Marcum offered herself as a candidate for U.S. Congress for the 4th District of Tennessee.  She ran an effective, competitive campaign.

She is a wife of 45 years to Dan Marcum, and mother of two: daughter Wendy Surratt, a retired teacher in West Tennessee and son Chad, a music entrepreneur in Nashville and a grandmother to Victoria Elisabeth Surratt a student at the University of the South.
